Abstract-

Groundwater quality assessment was carried out in intensive agricultural activity areas in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Kurunagala and Hambantota to study the suitability of shallow groundwater in agro-wells for domestic and drinking purposes following the complaints made by the community on kidney related ailments such as Chronic Kidney Disease(CKDu), diarrhoeal and other water related diseases. Results of all the study areas on several parameters showed that the agro-well or shallow well (6m-10 m deep) water is not suitable for drinking and domestic purposes. Complaints are more during wet season as such the salts and other elements in the soil washed to the well water due to wet season rains. However, there is no proof to show that the higher nitrate or fluoride or any compound of mixture of heavy metals such as Cadmium and/ or Arsenic is the actual cause for kidney and other health related issues among the community. But it is very clear that the well water from shallow wells (less than 10m) in dry and intermediate zones is not suitable for drinking and domestic purposes

What is the Reverse Osmosis?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For the University of Southern California a cappella group, see Reverse Osmosis (group).

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that uses a partially permeable membrane to remove ions, unwanted molecules and larger particles from drinking water. In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative property that is driven by chemical potential differences of the solvent, a thermodynamic parameter. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and suspended chemical species as well as biological ones (principally bacteria) from water, and is used in both industrial processes and the production of potable water. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be "selective", this membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as solvent molecules, i.e., water, H2O) to pass freely.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

Wastewater Treatment?

Wastewater aeration is the process of adding air into wastewater to allow aerobic bio-degradation of the pollutant components. It is an integral part of most biological wastewater treatment systems. Unlike chemical treatment which uses chemicals to react and stabilize contaminants in the wastewater stream, biological treatment uses microorganisms that occur naturally in wastewater to degrade wastewater contaminants.

Our Ongoing Project

Project brief-
